FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Northwest Arkansas Storm Shelters

Can your shelters be installed in existing homes?

Absolutely! We can install an above ground storm shelter virtually anywhere. If we’re installing an underground tornado shelter, we’ll cut through the concrete pad with a diamond-cut wet saw to create space.

What size storm shelter do I need?

This depends on how many people are in your family. FEMA recommends that each person in a storm shelter be given 6 square feet of floor space. With that in mind, the smaller units we install can seat up to 8 people comfortably, and our jumbo units can seat up to 12.

How long does it take to install a shelter?

It takes us 4-5 hours to install a typical underground storm shelter. However, it may take longer for the concrete we pour around the shelter to dry. We can give you a firmer timeline when we see what we’re working with.

Has the door/lid been tested?

Yes, it has. The ¼” steel lids we install have been impact tested at Texas Tech. We use them because they meet or exceed FEMA requirements.

Will a cell phone work inside the shelter?

We usually find that phones will work, but you might want to test your family’s cell phones before a storm comes.

Where can I find more information about tornadoes in our area?
